Surrey Mounties bust two car theft suspects in three hours

Police say the two men, both from Surrey, are 'prolific offenders'

Surrey RCMP says two men have been arrested and charged after being caught in allegedly stolen vehicles.

The Auto Crime and Property Crime target teams arrested two “known prolific offenders” within three hours of each other in different areas of the city, according to an RCMP release Friday (Jan. 18). Both men are from Surrey, RCMP said.

Shane Rosteski, 25, has been charged with: one count of possessing stolen property, one count of failing to comply with a conditional sentence order, two counts of possessing stolen or forged credit card data and three counts of driving while prohibited.

David Traill, 56, has been charged with one count of possessing stolen property, one count of dangerous operation of a conveyance, one count of possessing instruments for the purpose of break and entering, one count of obstruction of a peace officer and one count of driving while prohibited.

The Auto Crime Target Team (ACTT) officers, according to the release, were on patrol in the Fleetwood area around 9:45 a.m. on Jan. 14 when they found a white BMW X1 SUV that was “reported stolen on Jan. 11, 2019.”

Police said the ACTT officers, along with the Property Crime Target Team, watched the BMW and its driver “until it began to drive away.”

Officers then followed the BMW until it came to a stop, reads the release. When the driver, Rosteski, left the vehicle and began to walk away, police said the officers took Rosteski into custody “without incident.”

About three hours later at 12:45 p.m., ACTT officers were patrolling in City Centre when they found a white Dodge Ram pick-up truck that had been reported stolen earlier that day, according to police.

Police said officers watched the Dodge and its driver “until it began to drive away,” and then officers followed the vehicle until it came to a stop.

When the driver, Traill, left the vehicle, “he retreived a bicycle from the box of the truck and began to pedal away,” police said. Surrey RCMP said officers “quickly engaged the suspect” who fled on the bicycle, but he “subsequently crashed attempting to ride over a set of railway tracks.”

The suspect, police said, was taken into custody “without further incident.” RCMP said he had “minor injuries” from the accident.

“Property crime, including auto theft, continues to be a priority for our detachment and has seen a downward trend across the city the last few years,” said Staff Sergeant Mike Hall, Acting Pro-Active Enforcement Officer in the news release.

“Our overt and covert officers regularly patrol our streets gathering intelligence and strategically targeting known prolific criminals. The public can assist us by reporting stolen property or suspicious individuals as quickly as possible so that we can prevent further crimes in our community from being committed.”
