Surrey RCMP opens its doors to the public on Saturday (May 14) during an annual event celebrating Police Week.
The open house runs from noon to 3 p.m. at the main detachment building (14355 57th Ave.), and will feature “watch briefings” for kids, police vehicles and equipment on display, food, demonstrations by integrated units (police dogs, the Air 1 helicopter, dive team, forensics, ERT), photo ops, career info and more.
The family event is a great opportunity for local residents to “come out and meet some of our officers and learn first-hand about some of our teams, tools and equipment,” according to Bill Fordy, Surrey RCMP’s officer in charge.
For more details, visit Surrey.rcmp-grc.gc.ca. Note that many of the activities and displays will be held outside, so dress accordingly.
Meanwhile, the Surrey RCMP’s 2016 Citizen and Youth Police Academies, running from Sept.14 to Nov. 2, offers insight into a typical day in the life of a police officer as well as what the drug section, major crimes section, forensics police, police dog handlers, traffic cops and other investigators do.
Applications for the eight-week course will be accepted from youths until May 31 and from adults between June 1 and June 30.
Participants will also learn some basic law, as well as about police-media relations and crime prevention.
“Over the past few years these academies have demonstrated that our residents are eager to learn more about the different aspects of policing,” Fordy said, “and what they can do to help us enhance public safety.
“A well-informed and engaged community is our greatest asset to achieving the shared goal of reduced crime and safe neighbourhoods,” he added.
