Five people have been arrested after a man was shot and another was injured in a car crash in Guildford on Monday night. Police believe it’s gang related.

Both injured men were taken to hospital in serious condition.

“Early indications are that these incidents are related,” Surrey RCMP Corporal Elenore Sturko told the Now-Leader early Tuesday morning, when police were still on scene. “The investigation is still in its early stages, but initial indications are that this is a targeted incident related to the ongoing Lower Mainland gang conflict.”

It happened around 9 p.m. on April 1 with shots fired in the 15300-block of 102A Avenue.

Footage from the scene of a crash believed to be related shows significant damage to two vehicles, one of them a blue sedan, in what appears to have been a T-bone crash.

“One has gone into a residence,” said Sergeant Chad Greig. Nobody in the house was injured, he added.

Guns were seized from the crash scene, police said.

A Black Press freelancer at the scene said there were “unconfirmed reports” the collision followed a “shootout between two vehicles.”

According to the Surrey RCMP there have been 10 reports of shots fired in Surrey so far this year. There were 38 shootings in Surrey in 2018, and 59 in 2017. In 2016 there were 61 and in 2015 there were 88.
