SURREY — Police are investigating a shooting in Newton.
It happened Wednesday night, in the 8300-block of 135A Street. Surrey RCMP Corporal Scotty Schumann said shots had been fired at about 11 p.m. “outside a residence in the area where a group of persons had been gathering.
“No injuries were reported,” he said. “A black pickup truck was observed fleeing the scene along with a possible male suspect fleeing the area on foot.”
Police have located the truck and are looking for a tall, slim white man who was wearing jeans, a white T-shirt and possibly a white hat. Schumann said this gunfire incident — Surrey’s 38th this year — is not believed to be connected to the “recent spike” in drug-related violence.
Police have not released a motive, if they have one. Witnesses are asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or, if they wish to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
Meantime, a Surrey man is facing seven charges in connection with a shooting in Langley City on April 30th.
Curtis Alexander Homeniuk, 36, is in custody pending his appearance in Surrey provincial court next Tuesday. He is charged with possession of a firearm, aggravated assault, using a firearm in the commission of an offence, uttering threats, possession of a firearm without a licence and possessing a firearm knowing it was not licensed or registered.
Corporal Holly Largy, of the Langley RCMP, said the 45-year-old victim, a man whose name has not been released, is recovering and is no longer in hospital.
The Langley shooting happened at about 4:30 a.m., at an apartment building in the 5500-block off 209th Street in Langley City.
