SOUTH SURREY — Surrey RCMP are asking witnesses to help them figure out what caused a serious crash that sent four young people to hospital on May 26.
Police say a 16-year-old girl and her passengers are lucky to be alive after the grey Honda Accord she was driving got wedged underneath a semi-trailer at about 11:40 p.m.
Police believe she was racing with a brown Toyota Camry westbound on 16th Avenue in South Surrey when she crashed into the truck at high speed at 176th Street.
Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to rescue them. The driver and her three passengers – two girls and a boy, also teens – were taken to hospital and treated for injuries that weren’t life threatening.
Investigators say they have seized the first car, which did not remain at scene, and have identified its driver.
On Monday, police said investigators have also gathered evidence to indicate that alcohol affected the ability of the driver involved in the crash.
Police say neither driver is co-operating.
It’s believed both vehicles travelled south on 192nd Street between Highway 10 and 16th Avenue, and west on 16th Avenue between 192nd Street and 176th Street on May 26 between 11:20 and 11:45 p.m.
Investigators are looking for witnesses who may have seen the cars just prior to the accident. If you saw the crash or saw the two cars prior to the crash, please contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers, if you wish to remain anonymous, at 1-800-222-TIPS or www.solvecrime.ca.
