Surrey RCMP are seeking witnesses to a fatal crash in Surrey late Saturday afternoon, in the hopes of learning more about what led to the incident.

The collision, involving an SUV and a southbound semi-truck, happened at 176th Street and 96th Avenue in Port Kells just before 5 p.m. on Aug. 11, resulting in police closing the area for several hours to investigate.

Two women, ages 54 and 27, who were in a Hyundai Santa Fe SUV were killed.

One of the women died at scene, the second died later in hospital, and two other passengers of that vehicle were taken to hospital with serious injuries, according to Surrey RCMP.

Police have not released their names.

Surrey RCMP’s Criminal Collision Investigation Team would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision, the driving behaviours of both vehicles before the crash, or may have dash cam footage.

Contact Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers, to remain anonymous, at 1-800-222-TIPS or solvecrime.ca.

“Initial information indicates that a Volvo semi-tractor unit was travelling southbound on 176th Street and collided with a Hyundai Santa Fe SUV, which was travelling northbound on 176th Street and turning westbound onto 96th Avenue,” Surrey RCMP said in a release.

The driver of the Volvo was transported to hospital with minor injuries.

Police don’t believe alcohol or speed were factors in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been laid.
