SURREY — Motorists and pedestrians will see a lot of Sandeep Johal’s work on local streets this year.
She’s the winning artist in the city’s 2017 street banner design competition, with work that depicts Stellar’s Jay birds and drawings of all provincial and territorial flowers.

Johal’s “Onward and Upward” banners can be seen at various locations in Surrey, including University Drive and King George Boulevard.
The competition theme was “Canada, Our Home,” in celebration of our nation’s 150th anniversary.
The artist said she wanted to do an artwork full of joy, wonder, and optimism as Canada looks towards a brighter future together.
“These birds represent the journey that has brought thousands of people to Canada’s shores, from the First Nations people to the early settlers to immigrants and refugees, like my parents who immigrated to Canada from India in the early 70s,” Johal stated.
“Flowers come from seeds, which take root and grow. These flowers represent the heartiness of Canada’s people who have laid down roots and worked hard to build better lives for themselves and their families, my parents included.”
Surrey’s public art banner program, established in 2000, has featured designs by artists such as Gordon Smith and Robert Davidson. CLICK HERE for more details.
