Williams Lake RCMP are recommending charges of mischief against two males after they were literally caught red-handed spray painting on the city’s middle school.
Staff Sgt. Del Byron said police received a call at 8:31 p.m. Monday from a school district worker in the area of the school, located at 1045 Western Avenue, reporting that two males were spray painting on the back of Lake City Secondary’s Columneetza Campus building.
Byron said the suspects, ages 17 and 19, left the area through the school’s soccer field where they were quickly cut off by police on Moon Avenue, and apprehended on Boundary Street after a brief chase.
Byron said both suspects had red paint on their hands when they were arrested — the same colour that was used to vandalize the school.
Vice principal Craig Munroe said maintenance staff were at the school first thing Tuesday morning to cover up the many obscenities, complete with spelling mistakes, which were painted across much of the back wall of the gymnasium.
“They had to roller it on there was so much of it,” he said.
Munroe noted that although it is disappointing, vandalism is certainly not the biggest problem at the middle school.
“Our biggest issue is attendance,” Munroe said.
The suspects were expected to make a court appearance Tuesday.
