Telus has invested $300,000 to build a new wireless site in Nanaimo to meet the growing demand for services in the Departure Bay area.

The investment will add more network capacity to the existing 4G wireless coverage within the Departure Bay ferry terminal, as well as surrounding residences and businesses.

“Due to the explosive growth in smartphone use, there has been a dramatic increase in traffic on the network, particularly in congested areas like a ferry terminal,” said Ray Lawson, Telus general manager for Vancouver Island. “The investment we have just made in Nanaimo increases wireless capacity in and around Departure Bay to ensure excellent service today and into the future as more and more residents and visitors to our community adopt smartphones and other wireless devices.”

The work is part of $9.6 million in infrastructure upgrades being made in Nanaimo in 2012 and builds upon the $26 billion Telus has invested in technology and operations throughout the province since 2000.
