Before the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) paused operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Terrace’s Quinn Mulder was leading the league in rookie scoring and playing a valuable defensive role.
The six-foot-one, 185 pound forward has scored nine points in nine games for the Swan Valley Stampeders while being trusted to kill penalties and take defensive zone faceoffs.
Mulder played his minor hockey in Terrace and skated in his first season of junior hockey with the 100 Mile House Wranglers of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) in 2019-20.
He said his line’s role on the team takes off some of the pressure to put up offensive numbers.
“As a line I don’t think we are asked to or expected to produce a whole lot,” he said in a KIJHL media release. “We find ways to help the team out and put some points on the board.”
Barry Wolff, Stampeders coach, said the team was patient with Mulder during training camp because a lack of available ice in Terrace and COVID-19 restrictions made preparing for the season difficult.
“He earned a spot to start the season and quickly grew into a regular in the lineup,” Wolff said in the release. “He is a great person and a great teammate.”
The MJHL began its season in late September, but was forced pause all hockey activities on Nov. 12 due to Manitoba public health restrictions. The league has created a Restart Action Plan that will be initiated when provincial restrictions allow.
The Swan Valley Stampeders sit in second place in the Northwest Division with five wins and four losses.
