PEOPLE INTERESTED in becoming an auxiliary constable can mark their calendars for an information session next month.
Terrace RCMP are looking for citizens of good character to become the ultimate volunteer and join the Auxiliary Constable Program. The police are looking to strengthen community and police partnerships by providing volunteers with the opportunity to address the cause of, or reduce the fear of, crime and disorder.
“The mandate of the auxiliary program is to participate in community policing activities relating to public safety and crime prevention (on an unarmed basis) as volunteers under the command of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police,” states Const. Angela Rabut, auxiliary coordinator Terrace RCMP.
Auxiliary constables must contribute 160 hours of volunteer time per year. They participate in community policing programs and ride on patrol with police officers in a support role, which provides an opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and expertise in order to deliver crime prevention and community policing programs to the public.
Training includes approximately 150 hours of classroom, practical, and police defensive techniques for five months. There is a mid-term and final exam administered by the Justice Institute of British Columbia. Commitment to this training course is significant and attendance at all classes is mandatory.
Auxiliary recruitment information sessions will be held on March 22 at 6 p.m. in the education room of Gitaus Administration Building, 7 p.m. in the meeting room of Terrace Pubic Library, and 8 p.m. in the mezzanine of the Kitsumkalum Hall.
Applicant Requirements:
Must be over the age of 19 years
Canadian Citizen
Minimum education of a high school diploma or equivalent
Valid Class 5 British Columbia Drivers Licence or higher
Certificate of medical suitability
Applicants must pass a suitability interview
Applicants must attain RCMP security clearance
