Still haven’t registered your bike with 529 Garage? Terrace RCMP and local bicycle repair shop R.E.D. Cycles want to help riders get started with the free bike theft program.

On Saturday, Oct. 5 Terrace RCMP is setting up shop at R.E.D. Cycles, 4618 Straume Ave., from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., to set people up with a profile and anti-theft Shield sticker using the free bike-theft prevention program, 529 Garage.

Registering with 529 Garage allows bike owners to create an online profile featuring pictures of their bike, its serial number, and other details which make it unique. Each person who registers is also encouraged to place a Shield ID on their bike frame. The ID is a tamper-proof sticker with a seven-digit code. Trying to remove it leaves clear signs of tampering and helps indicate to police the bike may be stolen.

“In September RCMP partnered with the Terrace Off-Road Cycling Association (TORCA) and were able to register more than 25 bikes during its Spring Creek trail ride,” says Const. Crystal Evelyn, Terrace RCMP community policing officer. “The event was very successful and allowed people to take some of the simple steps necessary in reducing crime in our community.”

Until the end of October, Terrace RCMP will keep opening its doors Monday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the detachment, 3205 Eby St., to help people register bikes with 529 Garage and provide them with the Shield ID Stickers.

Bike theft prevention tips:

• Record serial numbers (regardless of the value of the bike) so that they can be added to police computer records, helping bikes be identified if located.

• Most bike stores keep serial numbers and information of your purchased bike. Check with your local bike shop to obtain that information if your bike does get stolen.

• Photograph your bike, as a reference, to assist police in identification.

• Never leave your bike unlocked in public.

• Never lock your bike by the front wheel only.

• If storing your bike at home, store it in a safe place using a lock or on your property inside a locked area.

• If you are leaving your bikes unattended in the back of a vehicle, lock the bikes to your vehicle. Choose appropriate places to park.
