New year celebrations will be a day to remember for one family as Terrace welcomes the first baby of the decade.
On Jan. 1 at 2:25 p.m. at the Mills Memorial Hospital, baby boy Gavin Hansen was born to parents Christina Rogers-Hansen and David Hansen at eight pounds, 15 ounces.
“We’ve been waiting for like a week so it was pretty exciting for him to land on this day, that worked out really well,” David says. “It was a huge surprise to have another little boy.”
Initially, the family was expecting the baby to be born around Christmas time but when the holidays passed, they began to hope he would arrive on his mom’s birthday on Dec. 30 instead.
But when that date passed, it turns out it was all well worth the wait when Gavin finally introduced himself to the world on the first day of 2020.

David says their newborn is their sixth child and although he was an unexpected addition, his older siblings are all thrilled to have another member join the family. With their now second-youngest son Judah at two-years-old, they’re glad to have the pair of siblings so close in age.
Gavin’s older siblings include 15-year-old Jayden, 13-year-old Justin, 12-year-old Erica and 8-year-old Claire.
“We’re pretty stoked to have them all grow up together… we weren’t planning to have six kids but we definitely have no regrets, we’re quite ecstatic,” he says. “We kind of feel like our youngest kids are like a gift, like bonus kids.”
He says they didn’t have a name in mind but both came up with the name Gavin unexpectedly on the spot, which means “God sent”, and agreed on it immediately.

David adds that mother Christina had a healthy delivery thanks to the helpful staff at the hospital, along with the support of their 12-year-old Erica — who stayed with her mom the entire time.
“It was pretty cool, she was there for the whole thing from beginning to end and the doctor showed her the placenta and she was even offered to cut the cord,” David says with a laugh. “They ended up letting me do it but she was part of the whole thing, taking it like a hero.”
The first baby born in British Columbia in 2020 was delivered at Fraser Health’s Royal Columbian Hospital, at 12:01 a.m.
