The Canadian Cancer Society is a national, community based organization of volunteers whose mission is the eradication of cancer and the enhancement of the quality of life of people living with cancer. Their vision is to create a world where no Canadian fears cancer.
The Canadian Cancer Society is committed to improving and saving lives. That’s why they are always looking for new ways to prevent cancer, find it early and treat it more successfully. It’s why they are always ready to give people with cancer the help and support they need to lead more fulfilling lives.
The Society also sets themselves apart from other cancer charities by taking a comprehensive approach against cancer; and they are the only national charity that supports all Canadians living with all cancers across the country.
The Canadian Cancer Society is the country’s largest national charitable funder of research into all types of cancer. They also educate people on how to reduce their risk of cancer and how some types of cancer can be found early through screening tests.
They also offer support services that help people with cancer and their loved ones at a time when they are scared and anxious. They are a trusted source of information about all types of cancer.
They advocate to governments on important cancerrelated issues on behalf of those affected by cancer.
The Canadian Cancer Society since the 1940s has channeled donations of over over $1.4 billion to cancer research. In that time, only about 25 per cent of Canadians with cancer would survive at least five years after their diagnosis. Today, the survival rate is about 60 per cent.
In 2016, thanks to generous donations, the Society invested $40 million in Canada’s most promising cancer research. As a result of that investment it has supported 287 lead investigators and a total of 342 research projects and awards.
Today the Society funds research into all types of cancer, across the spectrum of prevention and risk, diagnostic tools, treatment, survivor-ship and palliative care. About half of cancers can be prevented through healthy living and policies that protect the health of Canadians.
Screening tests help find cancer before you have any symptoms and even help prevent cancer by finding changes in your body that would become cancer if left untreated.
The Society also offers volunteer opportunities that include fundraising activities, health promotion, advocating for prevention, supporting people with cancer, office support and leadership roles.
With your support, by a donation or giving of your time, the Canadian Cancer Society is able to continue getting these life-changing messages to more Canadians. For more information about the Canadian Cancer Society check out: www.cancer.ca
