With six days left before her due date, Justine Ludwig spent New Year’s Eve singing karaoke, playing games and watching movies with her family.

“We came home with the kids and we tucked them into bed and my contractions had started,” said Justine. “I decided to start timing them and by 3 in the morning we thought we’d better head to the hospital. Things happened fairly quickly after that.”

Weston Ludwig, born Jan. 1 at 9:48 a.m., is the Comox Valley’s first baby of the new year.

Weighing seven pounds, 12 ounces, Weston is Justine and Dan Ludwig’s third child. Faith, six, gave a thumbs up when asked if she was excited about her new baby brother. Jack, three, was proud to say he is an older brother now.

“They’ve been anticipating him for months so we’ve been trying to say, okay, he’ll be born after Halloween, he’ll be born after your birthday in November, he’ll be born after Christmas,” said Justine. “The day after Christmas, they were like, ‘So is he coming?’ “

Justine says this was the easiest of her three pregnancies. She adds he is a healthy, easy going baby and is sleeping and eating really well.

The Ludwigs own Big D’s Bees Honey and also live and work on the Coastal Black Estate Winery in Black Creek. Justine said Weston will be a fourth-generation farmer and is now the second little Ludwig boy on the farm.

“It’s so busy on the farm typically throughout the spring and summer so having winter babies is actually ideal for us,” laughs Justine, adding that Dan also gets to be home a lot more.

The Ludwigs returned home from the hospital on Wednesday and are all excited about the addition to their family.

“It’s a great way to start the new year with this new adventure as a family of five.”
