The Comox Valley’s New Year’s baby arrives to welcome 2020

The couple's first baby was expected to arrive Dec. 31.

New year, new decade, new baby.

That’s the way 2020 started off for Aynsley and Antoine Van Oostdam, who are the proud parents to Pippa, the Comox Valley’s New Year’s baby.

Pippa was born at the North Island Hospital Comox Valley campus on Jan. 1 at 9:30 a.m. She was due on Dec. 31.

“She ended up just taking a little bit longer,” said Antoine with a laugh.

Pippa, who weighs 8 lbs. and 6 oz., is the couple’s first baby, and the new family of three is doing well. He and his wife welcomed some sleep at the hospital Thursday and added they will return to their Comox Valley home within a day or two.

B.C.’s first baby of the new decade, named Clarita, was born at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminister at 12:01 a.m. Jan. 1.

On Vancouver Island, Island Health’s first hospital birth of 202 came at 12:17 a.m. at Victoria General.
