The looping of the Vedder Rotary Trail in Chilliwack is now complete

The grand opening is Nov. 16 to celebrate the riverside trail upgrade

The Vedder Rotary Loop Trail is almost complete, and a grand opening is set for Nov. 16 to celebrate the upgrade.

“We were able to complete this project thanks in part to the Rotary Club of Chilliwack’s continued support,” said Mayor Ken Popove.

The loop trail goes from the Vedder Bridge on the north side, to the pedestrian crossing on the Keith Wilson Bridge and back along the dike on the south side, with more than 20 kilometres of riverside trail to enjoy.

“The Vedder Rotary Trail has been an integral part of outdoor recreation and tourism in Chilliwack for years, and we are very excited to see the loop trail finished,” Popove commented.

The first five kilometres of the Rotary trail were built in 1995, between Vedder and Sumas Prairie Roads, after a donation from the three Rotary Clubs of the day.

“Facilitating a high quality of life for residents is a Council priority, and as additional trail fragments were added, it became clear that looping the Vedder Rotary Trail would create a unique recreational opportunity for all ages in the community,” according to a city press release. “In addition to offering non-motorized trails for pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians, the loop trail connects a series of nodal points that offer parking, playgrounds, picnic facilities and washrooms, offering recreational opportunities for families and all types of recreational users.”

A new pedestrian bridge crossing the Vedder River, close to the loop’s midway point upstream of the railway bridge, is scheduled for 2022.

To celebrate the loop completion milestone, members of the public are invited join Mayor Ken Popove and Council for the grand opening event on Saturday, November 16, at 12:3o p.m. at the Vedder River Campground (5215 Giesbrecht Road). A BBQ is being provided by the Rotary Club of Chilliwack and light refreshments will be on offer at the grand opening. Attendees are asked to bring a refillable mug.
