For Immediate Release (June 1, 2017): The B.C. River Forecast Centre (bcrfc.env.gov.bc.ca/) has issued a Flood Watch Advisory for the North Thompson River, South Thompson River and the Thompson River through Kamloops and downstream. This is an upgrade from the High Streamflow Advisory that was issued on May 31.
A Flood Watch means that river levels are rising and will approach or may exceed bankfull. Flooding of areas adjacent to affected rivers may occur.
The TNRD urges residents living in low-lying areas to be on the alert for high water flows and to keep children and livestock away from unstable riverbanks, which are prone to sudden collapse. They should watch for debris flows that could damage pump intakes, culverts and bridges.
Sandbagging is one of the most effective ways to prevent or reduce flood water damage.
