Thousands of Peninsula residents are still without power after a powerful storm wreaked havoc on the Lower Mainland Saturday.

According to an update from BC Hydro Sunday morning, approximately 200,000 customers around Metro Vancouver were without power as of 7:30 a.m., including more than 50,000 in Surrey.

BC Hydro estimated the majority of Surrey customers would have their power restored by noon Sunday.

More than 4,000 homes and businesses on the White Rock-South Surrey border, near East Beach, are also without power; BC Hydro has estimated power in that area may not be restored until early Monday morning.

Saturday’s storm saw winds of up to 90 km/h knocking down trees onto homes and vehicles and blowing branches and debris across roadways, prompting a warning from the Surrey RCMP for residents to stay home.

A woman in her 40s suffered life-threatening injuries when she was struck by a falling tree near 100 Avenue and 148 Street.

RCMP say she was walking with her daughter around 12:30 p.m. when the tree fall on her. The woman’s daughter was not injured in the incident.

A toppled street light in the 14800-block of Marine Drive was moved out of the way by passersby, after nearly falling on pedestrians.
