Nanaimo RCMP are keeping a closer watch at Cinnabar Valley Elementary during back-to-school week after a threat was made to the school.
Dale Burgos, spokesman for Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools, said a threat directed at Cinnabar school was e-mailed to a generic account at the elementary last week. RCMP were immediately notified.
“We did some backtracking, looking to see if we can trace it all,” Burgos said. “Nothing was found; however, no credible threat was found.”
Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said the message forwarded to the school was troubling, but said the investigation deemed that there was no credible threat.
“Out of a sense of caution, we decided to have some police presence at the school,” he said.
A social media post from the school principal to parents and guardians noted that RCMP will be at the school throughout the week. The post noted that RCMP takes the threats seriously and that the safety and education of children are the school’s top priority.
“It’s business as usual,” Burgos said. “Looking forward to the kids’ return.”
