The City of Parksville will celebrate its 75th birthday with three separate events this summer that people are encouraged to attend.
Friday, June 19 marks the official anniversary of the city’s incorporation into a village in 1945. A community celebration will take place at the Parksville Civic and Technology Centre at 100 Jensen Ave E, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event will feature special guests and a birthday cake.
On Saturday, July 4, the Parksville Community Park will be home to a beach party, complete with an amateur sand sculpting competition, bocce and croquet tournament, as well as entertainment and food.
“This event is about the lazy, hazy days of summer and the opportunity to celebrate our world-famous beach,” said communications manager Deb Tardiff.
The third event in honour of the city’s anniversary is a city-hosted street festival featuring live entertainment and a variety of activities.

“Everyone is invited to join the festivities and enjoy live entertainment including the multi-award-winning children’s band, The Kerplunks and for the adults, Dinah D’s Contraband Swingclub. Bring your dancing shoes!” said Tardiff.
There will be a children’s bike parade as well as community vendors and food trucks. Events will be held at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre.
Parksville Coun. Teresa Patterson and Coun. Marilyn Wilson, both on the 75th Birthday Select Committee, spoke to the events at the Jan. 20 Parksville council meeting.
“We’re coming along quite nicely with the special committee and our activities that we are going to do, the birthday being the biggest event that we’ve planned,” said Wilson.
Patterson says that the committee is working on more details, and working alongside the McMillan Arts Council, the Parksville & District Historical Society and others to help with the events.
“We have quite a few events – three really large, major events. They tie in a lot with the history and quite a bit of the different organizations in our community,” said Patterson.
More details will be released about the events as they are finalized, and they will be announced on the city’s website as well as during council meetings.
