Three members of Courtenay council are gunning for mayor in the Oct. 20 municipal election.
Erik Eriksson was the first to announce when he rolled out his ‘Building Partnerships’ campaign last year. Then this week, first-term councillors David Frisch and Bob Wells entered the race.
Which means there will be some new faces on the next council, considering those who run for mayor relinquish their council seat.
In the last election, Frisch topped the polls among all Courtenay council candidates. Wells was third in voting and Eriksson sixth.
Frisch’s focus includes downtown revitalization, Smart Growth and transportation. Wells, who chairs the regional district water committee, considers housing and homelessness to be major issues. Eriksson’s goals include economic development, and bringing up the average income level.
Eriksson, who launched his website in January, took the announcements regarding competition for the mayor’s seat in stride.
“It is going to make for an interesting election,” he said. “I look forward to the challenge.”
It is too early for Larry Jangula to say if he plans to seek re-election to a third term in the mayor’s chair.
