Time limited parking added near Murrayville operations centre

Parking now restricted to maximum of two hours along 224 Street, 47 Avenue and 46A Avenue

The Township of Langley is implementing new time limited parking near the Municipal Operations Centre in Murrayville.

Parking is now restricted to a maximum of two hours between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., seven days a week, along 224 Street, 47 Avenue and 46A Avenue near the operations facility at 4700 224 St.

“All affected area residents have been notified in writing of the changes to parking regulations in the area,” a Feb. 22 memo from the Township’s engineering division says.

“Staff working at the Operations Centre have also been notified of the changes and reminded of the expectation for staff to respect the residential nature and character of the area.”

According to the memo, the operations centre currently has 205 parking stalls for staff in two separate parking areas, which can be accessed off 224 Street, north and south of 47 Avenue.

The facility is mainly used for storage of materials and equipment, but also houses a fire department training facility and some Township departments, including parks design and development, public works, purchasing, and safety and strategic initiatives.

In 2012, the Township received a petition from residents concerned that people were parking on local streets to use the operations centre, and were specifically upset about staff using 47 Avenue to access the southern parking lot. The petitioners suggested the Township make access changes, and outlined three different options that would address their concerns. Township staff, however, said the proposed changes would not be feasible, and have now put in time restricted parking instead.

“Given the anticipated growth and associated future operational demands, as well as the need for efficient delivery of services, long-term municipal plans include the creation of a secondary (satellite) yard and relocation of the fire training facility to other appropriate locations, which are anticipated to address some of the area residents’ concerns,” the memo says.

“In the meantime, staff will continue to review potential efficiencies [sic] to create more parking stalls, encourage car-pooling, monitor and enforce parking infractions, and reinforce the need for staff working at the Operations Centre to respect the residential character of the neighbourhood.”
