At this time of year, we at the News Bulletin always go back over our website statistics as one way to review the year that was.
In 2018, the article that had the most readership online was ‘Person dies after fall from VIU building,’ published Nov. 5. Spencer Stone Shutes was extremely intelligent and hard-working, said Sophie Lyle, the girlfriend of Stone’s older brother.
“He was a 21-year-old guy trying to support his mom and keep their household running and was working and going to school and trying to live his life as best he could given the pressure on him,” said Lyle.
The second-most-read article last year was ‘More than 150 tremors hit Vancouver Island in a 24-hour period,’ from June 19.
Third was an article from just last week, Dec. 23, ‘Small island runs out of gas, groceries as power stays off on parts of B.C.’s coast,’ detailing the wind storm’s impacts on Pender Island.
Two articles making the list were published the same day, Aug. 6, both about a forest fire south of the city. ‘Crews battling wildfire in Nanaimo Lakes area‘ was fourth-most read in 2018 and ‘Evacuation order issued due to out-of-control Nanaimo Lakes wildfire‘ was eighth.
Fifth was ‘Man shot and killed during attempted arrest at Departure Bay ferry terminal‘ on May 8; it was later determined that the man shot himself at the exact same moment that police shot him.
Another article about a death came in as the sixth-most-read: ‘Nanaimo man dies after highway crash in Nanoose Bay Friday afternoon,’ published April 20.
Coverage of a particularly memorable event during the year was next, with ‘Discontent City campers break into empty elementary for Schoolhouse Squat‘ coming in as seventh-most-read.
Ninth was ‘Nanaimo nursery property sells in historic deal,’ June 20, breaking the news of the sale of Green Thumb Garden Centre and Nurseries.
Rounding out the top 10 was ‘Krog voted in as Nanaimo’s next mayor‘ on Oct. 20.
