The Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock 2018 team is wheeling its way toward fundraising events Nanaimo.
The Hub City is the halfway point of the annual 1,100-kilometre bicycle tour that covers the length and breadth of the Island to raise money to fight pediatric cancer and to send children in their own battle against the disease to Camp Goodtimes, a summer camp for children with cancer and their families.
The 22-member team, made up of RCMP, municipal, military and auxiliary police officers, volunteer firefighters, paramedics, media members and guest riders, left Port Alice on Sunday morning. As the team makes its way down the Island it will stop at dozens of schools and fundraising events.
The team kicks off the second week of the tour when it arrives in Nanaimo on Sunday, Sept. 30, when supporters will get a chance to meet the team that includes two riders representing Nanaimo, Const. Shane Coubrough and auxiliary constable Trevor Nettleton.

Sunday evening, people can show their support for the team at the annual Tour de Rock gala dinner fundraiser at the Coast Bastion Hotel. Entertainment starts at 5 p.m. followed by dinner, silent and live auctions and raffle. Tickets are $60 each.
The team will be at Inn on Long Lake for a good sleep before starting a big day Monday with breakfast at White Spot at Woodgrove Centre and lunch with a fundraising barbecue at Thrifty Foods at Port Place Shopping Centre, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The riders will be on site 11-11:40 a.m.
“Another great place to see them is they’re going to be visiting the Thrifty Foods at Longwood Station in the morning (9:40-10 a.m.) for a stop with B.C. Ambulance and they’re going to have cake and coffee and head shaves and presentations,” said Tanya Davis, Canadian Cancer Society Vancouver Island region annual giving coordinator.
The team also stops at McGirr Elementary School, Aspengrove School Pleasant Valley, Mountain View and Cinnabar Valley elementary schools before heading to Ladysmith and other destinations down Island.
