Town Council will discuss fire hall referendum in July

Creston Town Council is not ready to set a date for another referendum to finance a new fire hall.

Creston Town Council is not ready to set a date for another referendum to finance a new fire hall, members decided at the regular June 13th meeting.

After hearing an outline of the timeline of planned Community Fire Hall Advisory Select Committee’s communications plan, key messaging and principles from Corporate Officer Stacey Hadley, Council agreed to discuss possible referendum plans in July. In other Town Council news:

• Fire Chief Mike Moore was presented with a British Columbia 25 Year Long Service award by Mayor Ron Toyota and former Fire Chief Bruce Mabin.

• A $250 discretionary grant was approved for the Creston Valley Rotary Club’s annual fundraiser, the Drive Fore Rotary golf tournament.

• A letter of support will be provided for the Creston Valley Public Art Connection’s art grant application to the Columbia Basin Trust. The funding application is to help purchase The Bear Circle, currently on display in front of Creston & District Community Complex.

• Steffan Klassen, Director of Finance and Corporate Services, presented the statutory 2017 Statement of Financial Information, which is available on the creston.ca website.

• Responding to request for more recycling locations for cans and bottles in the downtown area, Council approved to spend about $1,000 for racks that will be added to existing trash bins.

• Colin Farynowski, Manager of Engineering, presented a Well Source Protection Plan Final Report on the status of the Town’s auxiliary water wells on the Creston Flats.
