Development on Grand Street in Mission going to public hearing

A transformative move could be coming to Mission’s core, as 53 new townhouse units are being proposed at the site of the old St. Andrew’s United Church on Grand Street.

Noort Developments Ltd. is the company behind the proposal at 7740 and 7756 Grand St.

The church is being torn down and the proposal is set to head to public hearing on Sept. 5.

Renderings released within the proposal show grey row townhouses, in which some properties will face Grand Street and others will face a new strata street to be built in.

They also note the use of large personal patios and yards. A children’s play area would also be built.

The move to build more homes should be well-received by those desperate for more housing in the area.

Data released by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation at the end of 2016 shows Abbotsford-Mission has an overall vacancy rate of 0.5 per cent, which is down considerably compared to rates just five years ago.

The report states that a limited supply of housing in the Fraser Valley is keeping those vacancy rates low.

St. Andrew’s United Church was formed in 1927, when the former Presbyterian Church and Trinity Methodist Church amalgamated.
