The city is still digging into the root of the mystery surrounding trees that were illegally felled on parkland on the north side of Laguna Way near Universal Place in November.
Cutting down trees without a permit is illegal in Nanaimo and can carry a fine of up to $10,000 per tree.
Alan Kemp, city urban forestry planner, received tips from neighbours of the site where the trees were felled, but those leads went cold and failed to turn up suspects. No tips have been called in since.
“So no resolution to the incident,” Kemp said in an e-mail to the News Bulletin. “I wish I could say, ‘Yes, we caught them and they have been charged,’ but alas no good news.”
Anyone with information about any tree cutting in the area around Nov. 14 is asked to please call the city bylaws department at 250-755-4422 or the urban forestry coordinator’s office at 250-755-4460.
