Trail RCMP identify victim of alleged murder

Trail RCMP Sgt. Mike Wicentowich released a few more details on the case late Monday

Police have identified Morag Sigsworth, 71, as the woman found dead in a Montrose home last week.

Her husband, William Sigsworth, was arrested at the scene and remains in custody.

“On May 2, William Sigsworth, a 73-year-old Montrose resident, was charged with Second Degree Murder contrary to Section 235 of the Criminal Code of Canada in the alleged murder of his wife, 71-year-old Morag Sigsworth,” Sgt. Mike Wicentowich, from the Greater Trail RCMP, confirmed in a May 6 news release.

Mr. Sigsworth made his first court appearance in Rossland Provincial Court on Monday. He will remain in custody until his next court appearance on May 14.

Sigsworth’s second court date will be made in Grand Forks via video.

A publication ban under Section 517 of the Criminal Code of Canada is in place, which prohibits the publishing of any details about the incident at this time.

Trail and Greater District RCMP were called to a residence in the village at approximately 1 a.m. on Thursday May 2.

Upon attendance, officers discovered an adult female deceased. A joint investigation between the Greater Trail detachment and Southeast District Major Crime Unit ensued, which led to Mr. Sigsworth being charged with second degree murder.

Greater Trail Victim Services is available to assist anyone affected by this sudden and traumatic event. The service can be reached through the Trail RCMP office at 250.364.2566 or directly at 250.368.2184.
