Rarely does a day go by in the Trail area without someone reporting their unlocked vehicle was rifled through and belongings stolen.
For months – years actually – police have been reminding locals to lock their car doors and remove anything of value to prevent these crimes of opportunity.

This week, however, something a little more unheard of happened in Shavers Bench.
One of those petty thieves was caught red-handed and held at bay until the police arrived.
“On December 16, the Trail and Greater District RCMP Detachment conducted an investigation into a male breaking into vehicles in the 6000 block of Sixth Avenue,” Sgt. Mike Wicentowich reported Monday afternoon.
“A Trail citizen had caught the male rummaging through a vehicle and held onto the male until police arrived,” Wicentowich said.
“The male suspect was known to police and was taken into custody. The police are pursuing theft-related and other charges against the male suspect.”
The alleged perpetrator remains behind bars and will appear in court sometime later this week.
The detachment advises the public to continue to lock and remove all items of value from their vehicles, the sergeant added.
“This will help reduce and prevent the numerous thefts from vehicles occurring in the Trail and Greater District.”
