A new event by the Creston Rotary Club will allow trail runners to enjoy the scenery when the Mount Thompson Challenge runs July 10.
“Our club helps to maintain those trails,” said member Carly Jellis. “Why not take advantage of the spectacular view?”
Participants can choose between a 35-kilometre run and a 12-kilometre run, both starting and ending at Canyon Park. The shorter run gains a few hundred metres in elevation, while the longer one gains 1,387 metres as runners make their way along the Thompson Rim Trail to the top of the mountain.
The Mount Thompson Challenge is a complement to the Blue Heron half-marathon, which the club started in 2004, and proceeds go to help with water access and education in Honduras.
“A few members will go down each year and work on projects when they go,” said Jellis.
So far, more out-of-town runners than locals have signed up for the Mount Thompson Challenge, so organizers are hoping more will join in before the July 8 deadline. At the very least, the prospect of competing gives locals an excuse to check out the trails before next week.
“The trails are amazing for hikes, as well,” said Jellis. “I really like to encourage people to get active and get out there.”
Registration is $55 for the 12-kilometre run and $65 for the 35-kilometre run. For more information or to register, visit mtthompsonchallenge.yolasite.com or contact Candi Huscroft at clhuscroft@gmail.com or 250-254-1252.
