Trail traffic stop ends with a drug bust

A man is facing a number of charges after being stopped for driving with stolen licence plates

A 37-year-old male is facing multiple charges – including drug trafficking – after an eagle-eye RCMP officer spotted him driving in East Trail with stolen licence plates.

The man, who is not identified in a Monday police brief, was pulled over for a traffic stop Thursday afternoon at the intersection of Goepel Street and Third Avenue.

Sgt. Mike Wicentowich reported that the the man was allegedly prohibited from driving under Section 102 of the Motor Vehicle Act (driving while prohibited by court order or operation of law) and that he was arrested for being in possession of stolen licence plates.

Subsequent to his arrest, a search of the driver yielded two substances, which Wicentowich reports are “believed to be fentanyl and methamphetamine.”

Police also found a cell phone and approximately $900.

“Charges for possessing these allegedly illicit drugs for the purpose of trafficking contrary to Section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substance Act are being pursued against the driver,” the sergeant continued.

“The driver also had an outstanding Warrant of Arrest for three criminal charges.”

Those included “Personation with Intent to Avoid Arrest or Prosecution” as well as Obstructing a Peace Officer and Driving while Suspended contrary to B.C.’s Motor Vehicle Act.

Wicentowich says charges from the past incident occurred in the Lower Mainland last August.

The red Jeep Liberty the man was driving was impounded as it was uninsured and had several safety issues which made it unfit for operating on the road.

The defendant is slated for his first appearance in Rossland Provincial Court on June 6.
