Trailered boat collides with light pole on Johnston Road

Traffic was briefly interrupted on busy Port Alberni street, but no one was injured

Traffic was briefly interrupted on Johnston Road Tuesday afternoon after a boat collided with a light support pole.

A Dodge pickup truck was travelling eastbound on Johnston Road when the driver turned right onto Gertrude Street, said Port Alberni RCMP. The 74-year-old driver from Coldstream, BC misjudged the corner as he started his turn, and the 28-foot boat he was towing collided with a light support pole on the southwest corner of the intersection. The force of the collision caused the light fixture to fall to the ground, and the pole was bent.

The incident caused a short interruption in traffic flow in the area as BC Hydro crews were called in to remove the damaged pole. The boat also received significant damage as a result of the collision, but no one was injured.

The driver of the Dodge truck was issued a violation ticket under the Motor Vehicle Act for driving without due care and caution.
