On April 21 at approximately 1:00 a.m. the New Hazelton RCMP responded to a report of a vehicle being struck by a train in New Hazelton beneath the Highway 16 CN overpass.

Responding police located a 2008 Chevrolet Trail Blazer that had been traveling west on the railroad tracks and was struck head on by an eastbound train, says New Hazelton RCMP acting detachment commander Corporal Don Wrigglesworth.

There was a single male occupant driving the vehicle and he was found to be trapped but conscious.

New Hazelton Fire and Rescue attended and began an extensive effort to extricate the individual.

Over the next two hours they worked diligently to free the male.  Once they were able to remove all of the wreckage it appeared that the male had only sustained minor injuries and was transported by paramedics to Wrinch Memorial Hospital in Hazelton, said Wrigglesworth.

The male is being investigated for impaired operation of a motor vehicle.
