A new Learn to Fish program has started up in Clearwater, which will provide the opportunity for those interested in learning the art of angling to pick up the skills needed to enjoy the outdoor activity.
The program takes place at the Clearwater Trout Hatchery and had its first run on June 3 where some youngsters tried their hands at catching fish.
“(Learn to fish) is designed to increase the interested in sport fishing in B.C and it’s geared toward kids aged five to 15,” said Emily Giesbrecht, Learn to Fish instructor.
“We take them through basic fish identification, fish handling, tackle, casting, and knot tying then we get to take the kids fishing for about an hour. We’re just hoping to get interest in sport fishing higher in younger ages.”

She added a need was identified in Clearwater in part because of the high level of tourist traffic and because the hatchery’s research is funded by money that comes in from the sale of fishing licenses, and the more people who know how to fish, the more licenses that are likely to be sold.
Some of the research done at the hatchery includes looking into the growth of the fish, studying their habitats and how different environmental factors affect the fish in the water.
There are also other fishing programs that will be taking place for older age groups.
“We’re actually running a program with the local seniors home and we do one that’s geared toward families,” said Giesbrecht.
“There’s also open fishing at the pond where anyone can come; programs cost money, but open fishing is free.”
