Trees are coming down in a Vernon park to ensure public safety.
The Greater Vernon Advisory Committee directed staff Thursday to cut down three trees in Kin Park because they were undermined by spring flooding.
“If there’s an immediate safety problem, let’s do something about it,” said director Bob Spiers.
The possible options for removal are contracting a private firm for about $10,000 or investigating whether the Ministry of Forests is willing to do the work.
And this could just be the start of logging.
Another three trees at Kin Park were possibly impacted by high water levels, and trees at Hurlburt Park, the Grey Canal Trail and BX Falls Trail will also be investigated for integrity, as will trees at some sites in Coldstream.
Tackling the issue, though, could create financial challenges.
“We haven’t allowed enough resources for danger trees throughout Greater Vernon,” said Juliette Cunningham, GVAC chairperson.
“We need to put more money into it.”
