COAST MOUNTAINS School District has received provincial approval to reduce by two the number of its trustees.

Terrace and Kitimat, who now have three trustees each, will lose one.

The reduction was approved by the school board at the Sept. 15, 2010 board meeting.

Trustees in favour of the plan said reducing the number of trustees follows in line with a large decline in the number of students within the district and corresponding closure of schools.

From more than 8,000 students in the late 1990s, the school district now has a student population of approximately 4,800.

As it is Thornhill Junior Secondary is set to close after the next school year and its students transferred to Skeena Junior Secondary as part of a wholesale shift in educational offerings.

Minister of Education George Abbot approved the reduction July 21. Members of the public were given the chance to make comments.

The reduction takes effect in time for this November’s school district elections.

Not all of the current trustees were in favour of cutting two board seats.
