Two bodies discovered inside Cordova Bay home after fire

Fire broke out around 3:30 a.m. in 4900-block of Cordova Bay Rd.

Saanich firefighters are investigating the cause of two deaths after a structure fire broke out at 4904 Cordova Bay Rd. early on Tuesday morning.

Saanich Police also responded to the 911 call, which came in at 3:27 a.m. when a civilian in the neighbourhood reported smoke from the residence, and believed there was a fire. Saanich Fire Department extinguished a fire inside the residence, and two people were found deceased inside the home.

A dog is believed to have survived the fire.

Police are reluctant to release any further details about the incident until they’ve informed the next of kin.

The nature of the fire is suspicious and arson is being considered, said Saanich staff sgt. Steve Eassie.

“The early estimate of the fire damage is $100,000. The fire appears to have started from within the home,” Eassie said.

Police are also assessing the apparent risk to the public, as the fire has been deemed suspicious.

A joint investigation is now underway by Saanich Fire and Police departments, in conjunction with the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit, and the B.C. Coroners Service, to determine the cause of the fire and causes of death.

Upon arrival, crews saw smoke billowing from the west side of the structure. They fought the fire from the inside until it was controlled enough to conduct a search, said Battalion Chief Randy Law.

The cause of this fire is unknown at this time.
