Two more potential cannabis stores are working their way through the licensing process in Castlegar.
Jimmy’s Cannabis Shop plans to open up in suite 107 at 1983 Columbia Avenue in the Kootenay Crossing Mall. The deadline for public input on the proposal is Jan. 31.
Cannabis Corner intends to open up in suite 120 at 630 17th Street in the former L&L Bakery location near Safeway. The deadline for public input on that is Feb. 7.
So far city council has approved three cannabis retail applications, which are now waiting for approvals from the province.
Residents and owners of businesses located within 800 metres of the proposed sites may comment by writing to the City of Castlegar.
The proposed location for Cannabis Corner is approximately 100 metres from the location of another proposed cannabis retailer in the old Arby’s building.

The City of Castlegar did not set restrictions on minimum distances between retailers when developing its cannabis zoning bylaws.

The public comment period is just one of the steps required before a licence is issued. The next step is for city council to approve the application.
If council approves the application, it then goes back to the provincial government, which decides whether or not to give approval for the businesses to operate.
The final stage is an application to the city for a business licence.
The City of Nelson currently has four cannabis store applications in the approval process and the City of Trail has five.
The first non-medical cannabis retail store in the West Kootenay opened its doors in downtown Trail on Jan 28.
