Union, CVRD reach tentative agreement

The Comox Valley Regional District and the United Steel Workers (USW) Local 1-1937 reached a tentative agreement Monday in a labour dispute.

The Comox Valley Regional District and the United Steel Workers (USW) Local 1-1937 reached a tentative agreement Monday in a labour dispute.

The union represents 81 staff members at the Comox Valley Sports and aquatics centres. Their wages range from $15.75 to $26.87 per hour.

The two parties have met several times this year to address amendments to the collective agreement that expired Jan. 31. Workers recently voted in favour of a strike.

The appointment of a mediator to help reach a collective agreement has ensured that no strike action will occur while both parties are at the table.

The tentative agreement requires ratification from USW employees and the CVRD board before an agreement becomes official.

“All parties are committed to working together to ensure quality service delivery,” a CVRD news release states.

An update on the next stage in the bargaining process will be provided as it becomes available.
