UPDATE Another vehicle collides head-on with highway pole in Pitt Meadows

Firefighters first on scene Sunday, used jaws of life Saturday.

For the second time in as many nights, a vehicle collided head-on with the same traffic signal pole at Lougheed Highway and Park Road.

Just before 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, a crew of about eight Pitt Meadows firefighters and two trucks responded after a white car collided head-on with the pole.

They arrived first and closed the southern eastbound lane while tending to the driver before police or paramedics arrived.

The driver, an 80-year-old woman, was not complaining of injuries, but had no recollection of what preceded the accident, and was taken to hospital, said acting fire chief Brad Perrie.

He said her vehicle hit the meridian, and that impact appeared to have slowed her car. It did not hit the pole with the same force as a truck earlier in the weekend.

On Saturday, firefighters used the jaws of life to extricate a driver from a truck that collided head-on with the same pole.

As many as 10 firefighters responded to that call, just before 9:30 p.m.

They arrived to find a blue pickup truck had collided, at high speed, with the pole, according to reports.

Debris from the truck was strewn down the highway, near the entrance to the Somerset subdivision, and a detached front wheel was in the westbound lanes.

Firefighters used the jaws of life and other hydraulic equipment to extricate the female driver from the vehicle. Her legs were pinned by the crumpled vehicle, and she appeared to have significant lower leg injuries, said Perrie.

She was transported to hospital by ambulance.

Eastbound traffic was reduced to a single lane while RCMP investigated.
