Police say an 86-year-old cyclist is fortunate to have suffered only six broken ribs after a T-bone collision with a vehicle on Sunday morning.
The crash took place at about 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of McDermott and Campbell roads on Sumas Prairie.
Const. Ian MacDonald said the cyclist was travelling north on McDermott Road when he was struck by a Nissan SUV, driven by a 50-year-old Abbotsford man heading east on Campbell.
MacDonald said stop signs are located for people travelling north and south in that area, but there are none for people going east/west.
The crash took place on a long flat stretch of road where the speed limit is 70 km/h.
MacDonald said it is “miraculous” that the cyclist survived the collision.
He is currently recovering in hospital but is expected to be released later this week.
