An 85-year-old man died after being struck by a panel van in Maple Ridge early Tuesday as snow continued to fall, according to police.

The incident occurred on 228th Street, north of Dewdney Trunk Road, around 6:45 a.m. Emergency services responded and the Maple Ridge resident was rushed to an area hospital. He did not survive the incident.

Ridge Meadows RCMP are in the early stages of their investigation, but have ruled out speed and alcohol, said Sgt. Brenda Gresiuk.

She added weather and road conditions, and possible unknown medical issues of the pedestrian are all being considered as contributing factors to the fatality.

Witnesses reported the man was crossing 228th on the road when he was hit, and was not using a crosswalk.

RCMP closed 228th St. during the investigation.

It was snowing at the time of the incident.
