UPDATE: Elderly woman injured crossing Kelowna street

Crews on scene helping struck pedestrian

  • Aug. 17, 2018 12:00 a.m.

An elderly woman remains in hospital suffering from serious injuries, after being struck while walking across Baron Road in Kelowna.

An RCMP officer who was investigating a property damage collision Aug. 17 at 12:24 p.m. in the 1900 block of Underhill Street, was flagged down by a concerned member of the general public, who reported an injured pedestrian involved in a collision not far from his location.

“Police believe that the elderly woman was walking across Baron Road when she was suddenly struck by a red Buick Enclave, whose operator was making a left hand turn onto Baron Road from Underhill Street, in heavy traffic,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey, in a press release. “Witnesses at the scene suggest that the woman landed on the hood of the SUV before falling under the vehicles tires.”

Although the pedestrian, an 82-year-old Kelowna woman, sustained serious injuries, she was conscious and breathing when officers arrived at the scene to assist. The woman was rushed to hospital, by BC Ambulance Service, in stable condition. Her injuries are not believed to be life threatening in nature.

“RCMP would like to acknowledge the number of bystanders who jumped in to provide first aid to the injured woman, and keep her calm and as comfortable as possible while emergency medical crews responded to the scene,” said O’Donaghey.

The driver, a 48-year-old man of Fort Saskatchewan Alberta, remained at the scene and fully cooperated with the police investigation. He was charged under the Provincial Motor Vehicle Act for failing to yield to a pedestrian.

Anyone who witnessed the incident and has not yet spoken to police is asked to call the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.
