Update 11:42 a.m. June 2:

The fire which started yesterday morning in a wood-waste pile at the Sicamous Landfill is now completely extinguished.

The Columbia Shuswap Regional District, which operates the landfill, stated that while mop-up efforts continue at the site it will reopen to the public at 1 p.m.

“The CSRD appreciates the efforts of local firefighters and contractors in putting out the blaze and preventing the fire from spreading beyond the wood-waste pile. We also thank residents for their patience during the temporary closure,” a release from the regional district states.

Original story:

A fire in a wood waste pile at the Sicamous Landfill was started by spontaneous combustion.

According to the CSRD the fire was not the result of a controlled burn.

“The CSRD does not ever conduct controlled burns of wood waste at any of its landfills or transfer stations,” a post on their website reads.

The fire started Saturday, June 1 at 5:30 a.m. fire crews from the District of Sicamous were working to put out the blaze at 950 Two Mile Road. By 10:30 a.m. the District reported the fire is under control.

Fire crews remain on scene working with heavy equipment operators to pull the wood pile apart to douse the flames.

The landfill will remained closed for the rest of the day and the CSRD will provide updates when the site will re-open.
