Oyster River and Campbell River firefighters responded to reports of a structure fire south of Campbell River this morning.

Chief Bruce Green of Oyster River said that a wood stove had caught fire in the basement of the home. Though the flames were contained to one room there is smoke and heat damage to the rest of the house.

Green called in the Campbell River department for mutual aid and both departments brought their water trucks as there are no hydrants in the area.

An attack team entered the home and put out the fire. Crews opened windows and set up fans to ventilate the home once the fire was out.

The owner was at home but not in the house at the time of the fire and Green said there were no injuries.

Around 20 firefighters responded to the incident and the paramedics were on scene to rehabilitate the firefighters who were on oxygen.

Chantrelle Way is located 5.5 km up York Road which is about 10 km south of Campbell River city limits.
