A furnace is being blamed for starting a house fire in a rural area east of Kelowna on Monday morning.

Firefighters responded to the fire at 5600 McCulloch Rd., about 30 minutes from downtown Kelowna, just after 11 a.m.

Upon arrival, thick black smoke could be seen coming from inside the house and firefighters entered the building to investigate.

Platoon captain John Kelly said there were no injuries and the house suffered some smoke damage.

Six fire trucks responded to the scene, including a pumper because there are no fire hydrants in the area.

Police, ambulance and Fortis were also on scene.
