Ridge Meadows RCMP surrounded a townhome Sunday evening at about 6:30 p.m. near Abernethy Way and 229th Street, responding to a threat.
Officers set up a perimeter and evacuated neighbours from their homes, telling them to run to safety, according to reports.
Eventually, a man was seen being removed from the residence in handcuffs and placed in the back of a police vehicle.
Ridge Meadows RCMP Sgt. Brenda Gresiuk said police received a call about a threat in the area, and that brought a critical response from police. There were police carrying automatic rifles at the scene.
Gresiuk said police confirmed the threat was not credible. She declined to comment on the nature of the threat, though, adding that such a police response can be alarming to the community.
“That’s how we respond to threats, to make sure we have adequate resources.”
About two hours after the evacuation, residents were allowed to return to their homes.
The man police handcuffed was detained during the course of the police investigation, but was released without charge.
Investigation of the incident continues.
