A police incident in West Kelowna forced Glenrosa Middle School into lockdown for an hour on Tuesday afternoon.

The RCMP said the incident occurred around 10:40 a.m. when officers tried to stop a vehicle along Glenrosa Road during a police investigation.

According to police, the suspect did not stop and took off at high speed in the vehicle.

Shortly after, officers located the vehicle unoccupied and sent out police dogs and a helicopter to locate the suspect.

RCMP said they decided to shut down the school and other local businesses for security reasons.

School principal Scott Parker said the lockdown lasted from 11:25 a.m. and 12:25 p.m.

“We thank the RCMP for their care, and for their on-site presence during the entire situation,” said Parker in a statement.

“All staff and students at Glenrosa Middle School are safe, and we have adjusted our schedule to make sure that students have their lunch before afternoon classes resume.”

While the Glenrosa area has since been opened to the public, RCMP said an investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

RCMP said there is no threat to the public from the incident at this time.

“The West Kelowna RCMP wish to extend their thanks to all those who were impacted, for their patience, understanding and full cooperation during the temporary road and business closures,” said RCMP Cst. Lesley Smith.
