NEWTON — Surrey RCMP say one man has been arrested and another is being sought after a black Mercedes crashed into a garage on Monday while allegedly fleeing police “at a high rate of speed.”

Surrey RCMP say incident began around 6:15 p.m. when officers saw a black Mercedes speeding in the 6000-block of 128th Street.

When police tried to pull the vehicle over for traffic violations, the car took off, Surrey RCMP say.

According to police, the vehicle continued to speed and soon after, crashed into the residence in the 12700-block of 67A Ave.

“The collision caused extensive damage to the structure and initiated a fire involving the vehicle and the structure,” notes an RCMP press release.

Police say witnesses saw two people flee the scene, one of whom police say they have arrested with help from the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Services.

Surrey RCMP are still looking for a second suspect and are asking witnesses who have not spoken to police to come forward.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502, or contact Crime Stoppers, to remain anonymous, at 1-800-222-8477 or solvecrime.ca.

No charges have been laid at this time as the investigation is ongoing.
